What amazes me about both this ad and the later Apple iPad ad is how both emphasize destruction rather than creation. I get the point of both ads, that the digital device has the capabilities of all these classic musical instruments, photographic tools, art supplies, etc. If the ad agencies had chosen some kind of non-destructive metaphor (say, a coven of witches dropping the things into a bubbling cauldron, then pulling out the digital device) and perhaps finished by showing the instruments, cameras, etc., all undamaged on the screen of the device, we'd probably be talking about the ads as masterpieces. But both times, the advertisers went with these lingering shots of traditional creative tools being destroyed. What does this tell us about the advertisers? Or maybe the Silicon Valley types who conceived of or at least approved these ads? The message I get is that they are less interested in creation than in destruction, which does not give me a good feeling about them.
